Xiaoyu lost her red scarf on the train. She noticed only when the doors closed and the wind touched her neck. The station office smelled of paper and coffee, and an old clerk named Mr. Feng listened to her story without hurrying. “Describe it,” he said, opening a large book.

While he searched the shelves, Xiaoyu noticed a sketchbook on the counter. It had no name, only a drawing of Platform Four at dusk. Inside were trains, pigeons, and a cleaner's cart, all captured in quick, confident lines. She turned the pages carefully. “Someone lost this too,” she said.

Mr. Feng nodded. “Three weeks ago. No name inside.” A boy in a school cap overheard them. “That's mine,” he said quickly. “I draw trains.” Xiaoyu asked him what was on the last page. He guessed a locomotive. But the last page showed the station cat asleep in a bucket.

The boy shrugged and walked away. Mr. Feng sighed. “People claim things they want, not things they know.” Xiaoyu studied the drawings again. One showed a woman sweeping the platform at dawn, her shadow long and blue. On the next page, the same woman was drinking tea beside a window.

“The cleaner,” Xiaoyu said. They found her on Platform Two, resting beside a cart. Her name was Auntie Mei. When Mr. Feng showed her the book, she wiped her hands on her apron before taking it. “I thought it was gone,” she said quietly.

She opened to the drawing of herself and laughed. Then she reached under the cart and pulled out a red scarf. “This came in yesterday,” she said. “I was going to put it on the board.” Xiaoyu wrapped it around her neck. Outside, her train was announced, and she ran, warm in more ways than one.
