All summer, a blue bicycle leaned against the wall of the school shed, wrapped in dust and a broken chain. Leo passed it every morning on his way to the basketball court. At first he thought someone had forgotten it for a day. Then July ended, and the tires went flat.
He asked the caretaker, Mr. Bell, who shrugged. 'It has been here since spring,' he said. 'No name, no lock that opens, no one asking.' Leo knelt beside it. Under the rust, he found a small silver bell shaped like a bird. He rang it once, and the sound was surprisingly clear.
Leo and Mr. Bell spent three afternoons cleaning the chain and patching the tires. Mr. Bell showed him how to oil the gears without hurrying. Together they hung a sign on the gate: 'Found: one blue bicycle. Please tell us its story.' Days passed. A few people joked about it. Then, on a gray Friday, a thin old man stood at the gate and read the sign twice.
He introduced himself as Mr. Vale. The bicycle had belonged to his wife, who rode it to the river every Sunday. After she died, he could not bear to look at it, so he left it at the school. Leo brought out the silver bell. Mr. Vale touched the little bird with one finger and said nothing.
Mr. Vale could not ride anymore; his hands were not steady enough. 'Would you keep it?' he asked. 'A bicycle should not wait in a shed.' Leo promised. The next Sunday, he rode the blue bicycle to the river, following the route Mr. Vale described: past the bakery, under the stone bridge, to the bench beneath the willow.
Now, every time Leo passes the little house on Chapel Street, he rings the bird bell twice. Mr. Vale looks up from his window and raises one hand. The bicycle is no longer unclaimed. It carries two people's Sundays at once, and the bell sounds clear in the quiet street.
