Ana counted her coins three times. She had enough for a bus ride, but not enough for the scarf in the shop window. Grandma's birthday was tomorrow.

At home, Ana sat on the kitchen floor and sighed. Her little brother asked why she looked sad. "I want to give Grandma something beautiful," she said. "But beautiful things cost money."

Ana looked around her room. She found a smooth stone, a red button, and a page of stickers. None of them seemed special enough. Then she saw the empty jar on her shelf.

She filled the jar with tiny notes. Each note said something she loved about Grandma: your warm hands, your funny songs, your apple pie. Ana tied a ribbon around the lid and felt a happy flutter in her chest.

On Grandma's birthday, Ana put the jar on the table. "I could not buy you a gift," she said. Grandma opened it and read one note aloud. Her eyes grew shiny.

She read every note, then hugged Ana close. "This is the best present," Grandma said, "because it is full of your words." Ana smiled. She had learned that a gift does not need to cost money to be precious.
