Mia found a blue notebook under her bed. On the first page she wrote: My Brave List. Then she chewed her pencil and looked out the window. What could a brave person do?
She thought of speaking in class, trying the high slide, and saying hello to the new boy. Each idea made her stomach feel wobbly. Still, she wrote all three down. "A list is a start," she whispered.
The next morning, Mia stood beside the high slide. Her friends waved from the top, but her feet felt glued to the ground. She read the second line on her list and took one slow step.
Up and up she climbed. At the top, the whole playground looked wide and bright. Mia closed her eyes, pushed off, and zoomed down. When she landed, she laughed so loudly that everyone turned to look.
On Friday, Mia saw the new boy sitting alone at lunch. Her heart thumped, but she carried her tray to his table. "May I sit here?" she asked. He smiled and moved his bag.
They talked about dogs and drawing. Mia did not feel perfectly brave, but she stayed. That night, she opened her notebook and wrote a new line: Brave can mean being kind, even when your voice shakes.
