We ordered one large pizza with eight slices. There were five of us at the table: Ada, Sam, Ravi, me, and my little sister Nina, who had invited herself.

The box arrived warm and heavy. Nina counted the slices twice. 'Eight,' she announced. 'That is not enough,' said Sam. 'It is if we are fair,' said Ada, and she looked at me.

We tried to be fair. Each person got one slice, which left three. Nina ate one quickly and reached for another. Ravi said he was not very hungry. Sam said he was very hungry.

Ada cut the last two slices into small pieces. It looked silly, but everyone laughed. Then Nina pushed her plate toward the middle. 'We can share mine too,' she said, with cheese on her chin.

We were still hungry. So we counted our coins on the table: enough for a small pizza, not a large one. Ada went out and came back with a box and a paper bag of apples.

We ate the small pizza and cut the apples into five parts. It was not the dinner we planned, but nobody complained. Nina fell asleep against my arm, and Sam whispered that sharing made the food taste better. I think he was right.
