On Monday, Mina found a small green eraser under her desk. It looked like a leaf and smelled of mint. She put it in her pencil case.
In math class, she wrote a mean note about Leo's messy writing. The words faded away. A kind sentence appeared instead: 'Everyone is still learning.' Mina stared at the paper.
She looked up. Leo was watching her from the window seat. He smiled and pointed at the eraser, then hid his face behind his book. Mina felt a warm, curious feeling.
After school, Mina tested the eraser on her spelling list. She wrote 'freind' and rubbed it. Nothing happened. A thin line appeared: 'Only unkind words.'
Next day, she found Leo in the library. He had found the eraser last term. It could not fix spelling or sums. It only softened words that could hurt someone.
Mina thought of a mean note she had wanted to write to her sister. Instead, she wrote, 'I was angry, but I still like you.' The eraser glowed like a tiny firefly.
On Friday, a new girl named Ava sat alone. Someone had written 'stranger' on her desk. Mina and Leo exchanged a look. They knew what to do.
After the bell, they rubbed the word away. In its place they wrote, 'Welcome, Ava.' The eraser grew smaller with each stroke. When they finished, it was as thin as a stamp.
Ava saw the words and smiled. Mina put the tiny eraser in a matchbox and gave it to her. 'For kind words only,' she said. Then all three walked home together.
