Rain tapped the windows all Saturday. Mira found a big cardboard box in the hall. 'This is a theater,' she announced. Her little brother Theo did not agree. 'It is a spaceship,' he said, climbing inside.
They cut a wide window in the front and hung a red scarf across it. Mira painted trees on one side. Theo painted stars on the other. 'Trees and stars can share a stage,' said their mother, bringing them tape and a flashlight.
They made puppets from spoons and socks. The queen was a spoon with a silver crown. The dragon was a green sock with button eyes. Just before the show, the cat jumped into the box and carried the dragon away.
Theo began to cry. Mira looked under the sofa, behind the curtain, and inside a boot. No dragon. 'We can make a new one,' she said. Theo wiped his eyes. 'A dragon who runs away,' he whispered. 'That is a better story.'
That evening, they performed for the whole family. The queen lost her crown. The dragon appeared as a striped scarf with a terrible roar. The cat sat on the audience's laps and yawned. Everyone clapped anyway.
After the show, Mira wrote a new sign: NEXT WEEK, THE DRAGON RETURNS. Theo drew a dragon with a suitcase and a map. They left the box in the hall, ready. The rain had stopped, but the theater stayed.
