On Sunday, Mei helped her grandmother fold dumplings. The kitchen was warm, and the table was dusted with flour. Mei counted each one as she placed it on the tray. When the family sat down to eat, only one dumpling remained on the serving plate.
星期天，梅帮奶奶包饺子。厨房里暖烘烘的，桌上撒着薄薄一层面粉。梅把每一个饺子放上托盘时都会数一数。一家人坐下吃饭时，盘子里只剩下一个饺子了。
Mei had been saving room for it. The dumpling was round and golden, with a tiny fold she had made herself. She reached toward the plate just as the doorbell rang. Her mother went to answer it and came back with Mrs. Lin.
梅一直留着肚子想吃它。那个饺子圆圆的、金灿灿的，上面还有她自己捏出的一道小褶。她刚把手伸向盘子，门铃响了。妈妈去开门，回来时带着林太太。
Mrs. Lin carried a chipped bowl. "I brought back your soup dish," she said. Behind her stood her grandson, Ben, who was visiting for the weekend. He looked at the dumpling plate and then at his shoes.

Mei's grandmother invited them to stay for tea. Ben said he had never tried a dumpling. Mei looked at the last one on the plate. She wanted it, but she also remembered how lonely she felt when she was new at school.

Mei picked up the plate and held it out to Ben. "You can have it," she said. Ben's face lit up. He ate the dumpling slowly, as if it were a treasure. Mrs. Lin smiled and said they had a whole pot of soup at home.

After they left, Mei's grandmother brought another tray from the kitchen. "I saved these for us," she said. Mei laughed and took two. The last dumpling was gone, but the table felt fuller than before.
