Sam counted his coins at the candy shop counter. He chose a small bag of lemon drops and pushed his money across. The shop owner, Mrs. Patel, was busy talking to another customer. She gave Sam his change without looking.

Outside, Sam opened his hand. There was one more silver coin than he expected. It winked in the sunlight. He could buy another candy or save it for later. His pocket suddenly felt heavy.

Sam walked slowly past the bakery. The extra coin seemed to whisper from his pocket. At the corner, he saw Mrs. Patel through the shop window. She was counting coins into small paper rolls, and her forehead was wrinkled.

Sam remembered how carefully she had counted his change the week before. He turned around and walked back. The bell above the door rang, and Mrs. Patel looked up. "I think this is yours," Sam said.

Mrs. Patel looked at the coin and then at Sam. "I was short by exactly that much," she said. "Thank you for coming back." Sam felt his face grow warm. He had imagined a reward, but her quiet thanks felt better.

The next Saturday, Mrs. Patel asked Sam to help sort the jars by color. He earned a few coins and a piece of ginger candy. On his way home, he counted them twice. Every coin was exactly where it should be.
