Jun loved Saturdays at Grandpa's house. The garage smelled of wood and sawdust, and the old red toolbox sat beside the workbench. While Grandpa made tea, Jun opened the little drawer at the bottom. It stuck for a moment, then slid out.
Inside lay a tiny wooden bird with smooth wings. Three letters were carved underneath: M. L. J. Jun turned it over and over. Was it a secret? He wanted to ask Grandpa, but footsteps sounded on the steps.
Grandpa came in with two cups of tea. He saw the bird and laughed. "Your mother made that when she was small," he said. "Today we have a wobbly chair to fix." Jun put the bird on the bench and held the chair steady.
Grandpa showed him how to tighten a loose screw. Jun tried, but his hand slipped. "Slow is fast," Grandpa said. Jun took a breath and tried again. This time the screw turned, and the chair stood still.
Before Jun went home, Grandpa gave him the wooden bird. "Your mother left it here for me," he said. "Now it is your turn to keep it safe." Jun held the bird gently and promised to bring it back on Saturday.
At home, Jun placed the bird beside his bed. He decided to add his own letter someday, but not yet. First he wanted to learn more about the girl who had carved it. He fell asleep thinking of sawdust, tea, and a chair that no longer wobbled.
