The community library had one rule about Mochi: do not wake the cat. Mochi was orange and white, and she slept on the returns desk from morning until lunch. Ms. Fang said the cat had worked there longer than anyone.
On a rainy Tuesday, a boy named Jun came in with a problem. He had lost a book about whales and could not remember where he left it. He searched the shelves twice. Mochi opened one eye, then closed it again.
Jun sat down to think. Mochi slid off the desk and walked past him with her tail high. She stopped by the lowest shelf near the window, where the picture books lived. Then she sat down and looked at him.
Jun followed. Behind a stack of atlases, he found his whale book, slightly dusty but safe. On the cover, a blue whale swam through a painted sea. He laughed and thanked the cat, who was already licking her paw as if nothing had happened.
Ms. Fang had an idea. She cut a cat shape from orange paper and wrote "Mochi's Shelf" on it. They taped it above the shelf. Now every child who lost a book knew where to look first.
Jun came back the next week with a book about stars. He placed it carefully on Mochi's shelf. The cat watched from the desk, blinking slowly. Ms. Fang said it was the most orderly the library had ever been, and Mochi purred as if she had planned it all along.
