The lunch bell had barely rung when the green bin outside the cafeteria tipped over again. Orange peels, milk cartons, and a single lost shoe slid across the courtyard. Mr. Vale, the caretaker, stood in the middle with a broom and a fading supply of patience. “Third time this week,” he said. Students stepped around the spill as if it were a puddle. Lena noticed what they ignored: the bin’s lid was warped, and its wheels pointed in different directions.

After class, Lena sketched the bin from three angles in her math notebook. She showed the drawings to Ms. Park, the design teacher, who was preparing a booth for the town’s spring design show. “We need something better than a poster,” Ms. Park said. Lena promised a working model. She recruited Sam, who liked tools, and Imani, who was shorter and saw the bin from a different height. None of them had designed anything for a real user before.

The team’s first prototype used cardboard, tape, and a wooden crate. Sam added a foot pedal to lift the lid; Imani painted arrows for bottles, paper, and food waste. On testing day, Imani approached while carrying a tray. The lid rose halfway, the arrows faced the wrong way, and rain soon softened the cardboard. By lunch, the pedal had jammed. Mr. Vale studied the soggy model and said, “That bin has never carried a tray.”

Instead of rebuilding at once, the team watched the real bin for a week. They noted where students stood and what they carried. Most arrived with both hands full, so a foot pedal was useless. The second model had a wide swing lid, a raised opening at tray height, and pictures instead of instructions. It was less exciting, but Imani could use it in four seconds. “A design is not clever if it makes people work harder,” Ms. Park wrote on their sketch.

At the town’s spring design show, the team’s booth sat between a lamp shaped like a cloud and a bench made from old skis. Their bin looked almost ordinary: green, waist-high, with clear pictures and a lid that swung shut. Visitors tested it with paper cups and sandwich wrappers. Mr. Vale arrived last, wearing his work jacket. He circled the bin twice, pushed its wheels, and dropped in an apple core. The lid closed with a soft click. “It stays upright,” he said, as if that were the highest compliment.

Lena expected questions about cost. Instead, a cafeteria manager asked for a lower opening, and a nurse wanted one that could be cleaned easily. The team wrote every request down. They did not win the grand prize. They won an order for six bins, a list of improvements, and Mr. Vale’s promise to test each version before it reached the courtyard. On Monday, the old bin vanished. Its replacement carried a small plate: Designed by students who finally watched.
