Papa had planned the trip in a spreadsheet with columns for trains, meals, and photographs. We were going to see the sea for three days, and he intended to miss nothing. At the station, he marched ahead with the tickets while Mama carried the oranges and my little brother, Dou, dragged his suitcase by one wheel. We reached the platform with eleven minutes to spare.

Then the announcement came: the train would be delayed for several hours because of track inspections. Papa immediately opened his phone and searched for buses. The next one was full. The one after that would arrive too late. Dou sat on his suitcase and began to cry. Mama bought three steamed buns and spread her scarf on a bench. “We are here anyway,” she said. Papa looked at the clock, then at the mountains beyond the station roof. For the first time that morning, he had nowhere to hurry to.

Beyond the station, Qingshui was a town with one bridge and a river too shallow for boats. We walked without a destination. A woman at a noodle shop told us her cat had learned to sit on the cash register, and Dou spent twenty minutes waiting to see it happen. Papa checked his phone twice, then put it in his pocket when Mama asked him to hold the oranges.

At the old bookshop, I found a travel guide from thirty years ago. The sea was listed as a full-day journey, not a quick stop. Papa read over my shoulder and laughed at a sentence about “the famous slow train.” He called the hotel and moved our booking to the next night. “We’ll lose a day at the coast,” he said. Nobody argued. Outside, rain began to fall, and we stayed in the shop while the owner told us about winters when the river froze. For once, our schedule had room for a story.

The next morning, the train arrived on time. Papa did not open his spreadsheet. At the coast, we skipped the lighthouse queue and sat on a wall eating peaches. Dou counted fishing boats until he lost track. Mama fell asleep with her hat over her face. I watched the tide pull small stones back and forth and thought about Qingshui, where we had done nothing that could be photographed.

In the evening, Papa asked what I wanted to remember from the trip. I expected him to suggest the sea. Instead he said, “I liked the bookshop.” We sat in silence, listening to water against the harbor. The journey had not become slower because we stopped moving. It had slowed because we stopped trying to collect every moment. When we finally walked back to the hotel, nobody checked the time. The sea stayed beside us, large and patient, doing nothing in particular.
