Cheng arrived at his grandfather’s workshop expecting to learn a craft in a week. Grandpa Hu was a bamboo weaver whose baskets hung from the ceiling like small brown moons. Cheng had already designed a modern phone stand in his notebook. “We could sell these online,” he said. “Simple shape, fast to make.” Grandpa Hu handed him a length of bamboo and a knife. “First, split it evenly,” he said.

Cheng worked quickly. The first strip was too thick, the second too thin, and the third cracked along an ugly line. By noon his hands ached and the floor was covered with failures. Grandpa Hu had not moved from his stool. He was weaving a basket rim with slow, continuous turns, each strip following the one before it. Cheng wanted to ask how long the old man had practiced. Instead he asked, “Can we start with the phone stand?” Grandpa Hu smiled without looking up. “The bamboo decides that,” he said.

For the next five days, Cheng came to the workshop before the heat rose. He learned to soak the strips until they bent without cracking, to keep the tension even, and to stop when his impatience made his fingers careless. His first phone stand leaned like a tired traveler. He hid it under a pile of shavings. Grandpa Hu found it, set it on the table, and put his phone on top. It held, but only just.

“Bamboo is not plastic,” he said. “It has a direction. Work with it.” Cheng began to notice how the grain curved, how a basket stayed strong because every strand supported its neighbor. He sketched a lamp with an open weave so light could pass through. Grandpa Hu corrected one angle, then another. They worked without speaking for an hour. When the frame finally stood, Cheng felt not triumph but surprise, as if the object had been there all along and he had only cleared away his hurry.

On the last weekend of summer, they carried the lamp to the river market. Cheng had imagined a crowd of buyers. Instead, a few people stopped, leaned closer, and asked who had made it. Grandpa Hu pointed to Cheng, then added, “He made the shape. I made him slow down.” A woman bought the lamp for her reading corner and asked whether they could make another. Cheng started to promise a dozen by autumn. Grandpa Hu touched his arm.

“One at a time,” the old man said. Cheng nodded. Before leaving, he wrote a small card and tied it to the lamp’s cord: “Woven in the Hu workshop, from bamboo that grew by the river.” It was not the clever label he had planned in his notebook. It said something truer. On the bus home, Cheng opened his sketchbook and drew a new page, not a product, but a chair he hoped to learn to make next summer.
