Every second Wednesday, Ahe listened for the van before she saw it. The engine made a low complaint as it climbed the last bend, and dust rose behind it like a slow yellow flag. By the time it stopped beneath the village hall, children were already gathered with empty cloth bags. Librarian Chen opened the back doors, and the smell of paper and rain drifted out into the mountain air.

Ahe always waited until the smallest children had chosen. She liked to watch their serious faces as they weighed one thin book against another. That afternoon, however, Chen made an announcement. Because the mountain road would be under repair and the library had fewer drivers, the van would come only once a month next year. The children fell silent. Ahe looked at the shelves, suddenly aware of how quickly a borrowed book could be finished and how long a month could feel.

The next morning, Ahe asked Chen whether some books could stay in the village between visits. Chen thought for a moment, then gave her a wooden crate, a stack of cards, and one rule: every book must have a name beside it. Ahe set up the corner beneath the village hall window. The first week was chaos. Two books were returned with jam on the cover, one card was blank, and a boy named Little Song insisted he had lost a book that was later found beneath his bed.

Ahe wanted to close the corner. Instead, she visited Little Song’s house and discovered that he had hidden the book because he could not finish it before the van left. She changed the rule. Books could travel slowly, as long as borrowers wrote where they were going. On rainy afternoons, she read aloud to the younger children. The corner grew untidy, but it no longer felt like a box of rules. It felt like a small room where stories waited for their next reader.

When Chen returned a month later, she found a line of children waiting not for the van but for Ahe’s corner. Each borrower presented a card, and each book carried a small record of its journey: “read by the river,” “read to my grandmother,” “returned late because of rain.” Chen read the cards twice. Then she opened the van and asked Ahe to help choose twenty books for the village collection.

The road would still be repaired, and the van would still come only once a month. Yet the library no longer disappeared between visits. It lived in cloth bags, on kitchen tables, and beneath the window of the village hall. As the van pulled away that evening, Ahe did not feel the old ache of watching it leave. She walked home with a book under her arm, knowing that another reader was already waiting for it.
