The notice on the community board announced that Willow Lane would be repaired in autumn: new pipes, wider paths, and a small garden where the bicycle shed stood. At a meeting in the reading room, Ms. Han asked the youngest residents to prepare a time capsule for whoever lived there next. Xiao Yu volunteered to write the letter. She imagined something grand, perhaps about history, until Grandpa Zhou said, “Tell them about the bench by the wall. My wife and I met there.”

By the end of the week, Xiao Yu had collected twenty suggestions and no agreement. The baker wanted the recipe for sesame buns included. A boy insisted on listing every cat in the lane. Someone else argued that the letter should mention the leaking roof and the arguments over parking, not only the warm evenings. Xiao Yu sat on the worn bench with a blank notebook. How could one letter hold a place that felt different to everyone who lived in it?

On Sunday, Xiao Yu visited Grandpa Zhou’s shop, where dozens of clocks ticked out of step. She told him that Ms. Han preferred a cheerful letter, while others wanted the problems remembered too. He opened a small clock and showed her a repaired crack in its wooden case. “You can hide it,” he said, “but the clock still knows.” Then he wrote one sentence for her: “We listened to the trains at night and complained about them in the morning.”

That afternoon, Xiao Yu returned to every doorstep with a single question: What should a future neighbor know? The night nurse said the third step always creaked. The baker said the courtyard smelled of sugar before sunrise. A girl drew the secret path behind the bins where stray cats slept. Xiao Yu stopped trying to make the answers agree. She began to see the letter as a room with many windows, each letting in a different kind of light.

On the last evening before the builders arrived, Xiao Yu wrote the letter in the reading room. She described the bench, the bakery, the cats, and the stubborn parking debates. She admitted that the pipes leaked and that the stairs were hard for Grandpa Zhou. She also wrote about neighbors who carried groceries for one another and children who turned the lane into a chalk city after rain. At the end, she added a request: “When you change this place, leave something for the people who come after you, even if it is only a bench.”

The capsule was a biscuit tin wrapped in cloth. Each neighbor placed in a small object: a bus ticket, a dried leaf, a key that no longer opened anything. Grandpa Zhou contributed a tiny gear. As the lid closed, Xiao Yu felt the strange fullness of the moment. She was not sending a perfect version of Willow Lane into the future. She was sending its real voice, and trusting that someone would listen.
