When Mr. Vale announced a postcard exchange with Little Gull Island, Jonah imagined palms and blue water. The first card arrived with a photo of a gray harbor and a school on stilts. On the back, a girl named Mira wrote that her class had nine students and the ferry came twice a week, unless the weather changed its mind.

Jonah's class lived in a city where the subway ran every four minutes. They found it hard to imagine waiting for a boat. Their teacher asked for honest replies, not tourist brochures. Jonah wrote about traffic, his crowded school, and the rooftop where he watched pigeons. He did not know whether Mira would find it interesting.

Mira's next card arrived with a drawing of a tide pool. She described a starfish clinging to a rock and a teacher who taught science with a bucket and magnifying glass. At the bottom, she asked whether city students ever saw stars. Jonah looked at the orange glow above the buildings and realized he did not know.

The two classes arranged a video call. For ten minutes, everything worked. Then a storm crossed the island, and the screen went dark. Jonah's class sat in silence, staring at a frozen image of Mira's classroom. The teacher tried to reconnect, but the signal had vanished. Someone laughed nervously; someone else checked the time.

Instead of ending the lesson, Mr. Vale asked the students to write what they had seen in those ten minutes. The island classroom had a cracked window, a shelf of worn books, and a map drawn by hand. The students had waved with both arms. Jonah remembered Mira pointing at the rain and saying something he had not heard.

A week later, a letter arrived. The storm had damaged the island's generator, but no one was hurt. Mira wrote that the school often lost power and that lessons continued by candlelight. She asked whether Jonah's class could send recordings instead of holding another live call. “We can watch them when the signal is strong,” she wrote. “Slow is better than never.”

In spring, Jonah's class raised money to visit the island. They expected to bring supplies, but the island students had prepared their own lessons. Mira led them through the tide pools, naming creatures Jonah had never noticed. Another student showed how the school collected rainwater. The visitors took notes and asked questions.

That evening, the power failed again. The mainland students looked for a switch; the island students brought lanterns. They sat in the school hall and talked about what their places had in common. Both had leaking roofs, teachers who worked too hard, and students who sometimes felt invisible. The differences mattered, but they were not the whole story.

Before leaving, Jonah gave Mira a postcard of his city at night. She gave him a smooth stone from the harbor. They promised to keep writing, not because their schools were the same, but because the exchange had made each place larger. On the ferry home, Jonah watched the island shrink, then turn into a line of light.
