The rumor began as a note passed between trays of macaroni. By lunchtime, half the school believed that Ms. Ortiz, the cafeteria manager, was taking money from the meal account. Evan heard it three times before he reached his table, and each version was uglier than the last. His friend Priya sat alone, staring at her untouched food.

“My aunt works in the office,” Priya said quietly. “She says the account is short because the new freezer broke, not because anyone stole anything.” Evan wanted to believe her, but the story had grown teeth. Someone had posted a photo of Ms. Ortiz carrying a cardboard box to her car, and the caption made an ordinary delivery look like a theft.

As editor of the school paper, Evan knew he could not ignore it. He also knew a denial without evidence would convince no one. He opened his notebook and wrote three questions: Where did this start? What can we prove? Who has been hurt? Then he asked Priya to come to the office.

The office secretary was not allowed to show them the accounts, but she did show them the purchase orders. A new freezer had been ordered in June, then returned in July. The refund was late, and the cafeteria had borrowed from next month's budget to keep serving meals. None of this was secret, but nobody had explained it clearly.

The photo was harder to trace. Eventually a seventh grader named Marcus admitted that he had taken it from the parking lot. He had heard the rumor and thought the picture proved it. “I didn't make up the stealing part,” he said. “I just shared what everyone was saying.” His hands shook as he said it.

Evan felt anger rise, then something less comfortable. He had also repeated the story before checking it. That afternoon, he and Priya interviewed Ms. Ortiz. She was tired and dignified, and she explained the broken freezer without once raising her voice. When she finished, she asked only that the paper tell students the truth before the next lunch period.

The article ran under the headline “What the Missing Money Was Not.” It explained the freezer, the delayed refund, and the harm done by one photograph. Evan also wrote about his own mistake; leaving it out would have made the correction feel like a performance. The paper went to every homeroom before the first bell.

Some students apologized to Ms. Ortiz. Others avoided Marcus, who ate lunch in the library for a week. Priya invited him back to the table. “He was wrong,” she told Evan. “But if we only punish people, the next rumor will just find a quieter hiding place.” Evan had no good answer, so he wrote her words down.

The paper started a new page called “Check It First,” where students could submit questions instead of whispers. It did not end gossip, but it gave people pause. At the next lunch, Ms. Ortiz placed an extra apple on Evan's tray and nodded. He understood that trust was not repaired by one article; it was rebuilt in small, ordinary choices.
