Aya arrived at the community kitchen at six forty, before the streetlights switched off. She tied on an apron, checked the donation boxes, and wrote the date on the fridge whiteboard. By seven, the first families would come for breakfast, and she wanted the milk out and the chairs arranged before the door opened.

Nobody thanked her for the chairs. That was fine. The volunteer coordinator, Mr. Haddad, was busy with forms, and the other students usually came at nine, when the room was warm and the work was mostly talking. Aya preferred the early shift. It was quiet, and quiet made her feel useful in a way she could not explain.

She had started in September because her teacher needed someone to fill a form. She stayed because of a small boy named Emre, who came every Tuesday with his mother and always asked whether the soup had carrots. Aya had begun to save him the bowl with the most.

In March the school held an assembly about service. Aya sat in the third row and listened as a boy named Luca described the community kitchen: the early mornings, the donation boxes, the families. He spoke well. He used the phrase 'quiet commitment' twice, and the hall applauded.

Luca had come four times, all of them at nine. He had never arranged a chair or opened a fridge at dawn. Aya felt something hot and tight behind her ribs. She imagined standing up, but her voice had gone somewhere far away, and the applause was already ending.

That afternoon she told Mr. Haddad she wanted to stop. He looked tired and did not argue. 'You have done more than enough,' he said, which somehow made it worse. She walked home by the river and decided, with great certainty, that she would not go back on Thursday.

On Wednesday she remembered Emre. She went in early one last time, planning to explain. Instead she found the whiteboard wiped clean and the fridge full of milk that would spoil without labels. She stayed an hour, then two. At nine, Luca arrived and asked her where the teaspoons were kept.

She did not answer the question. She picked up a marker and drew a table: days down one side, tasks along the top, names in the boxes. Mr. Haddad watched from the doorway and said nothing until she finished. Then he asked whether she would teach the others how to use it.

The table stayed on the wall all spring. People wrote their names without being asked. Luca chose Tuesdays, which surprised her, and learned to arrive at seven. At the end-of-year assembly, nobody gave a speech about Aya. But Emre's mother brought her a small jar of carrots, and that, she decided, was a better kind of being seen.
