The mill had been closed since before Daniel was born, but his grandfather still kept a key to the side gate on a nail in the kitchen. 'For emergencies,' he said, though nothing had happened for thirty years. On a grey Sunday in October, Daniel borrowed it.

Inside, the yard was full of grass growing through cracked concrete. The main hall was longer than his school gym and smelled of oil and rain. Light came down in dusty columns from broken skylights. Daniel walked between rows of silent machines, each one covered in a soft grey blanket of dust, and felt as if he had stepped into a photograph that had forgotten how to fade.

At the far end he found a wooden board covered in faded names and dates, written in careful pencil. Some were crossed out. Some had small stars beside them. He took a photograph and sent it to his grandfather, who replied within a minute: 'That is my row. Third from the left.' Daniel stood there a long time.

His grandfather's reply did not stop at one message. By evening Daniel had learned that the mill once employed nine hundred people, that his grandmother had worked the spinning floor, and that the last shift ended on a Friday with everyone waiting for a bus that never came.

The news came on Monday. A developer had bought the site and planned to demolish everything except the front office wall, which would become the entrance to a car park. Daniel's history teacher, Ms. Ferreira, saw the announcement and changed the term project. Instead of essays about national history, the class would record the mill.

They interviewed six former workers and scanned forty photographs. Daniel found a thick logbook in a cupboard and spent three afternoons reading entries about machine faults and birthday cakes and a flood in 1971. The book made the mill feel less like a ruin and more like a place where people had argued about lunch.

The class presented their work in the town hall, and the developer sat in the front row with his arms folded. Daniel expected him to be angry. Instead he asked careful questions about the roof and the loading doors, and then about cost. Ms. Ferreira answered what she could and admitted what she could not.

The plan that emerged was smaller than a museum and larger than a car park. The main hall would stay, repaired and cold in winter but dry. One end would hold a small exhibition; the other would be rented to carpenters and repair shops. The developer kept the land behind it. Nobody got everything.

On opening day, Daniel's grandfather walked the hall slowly, touching the machines he had once operated. He stopped at the wooden board and found his name. 'They spelled it wrong,' he said, and then laughed, and Daniel realized he had never heard him laugh like that before. The building had not been rescued. It had been given a job.
