On the first warm Saturday of spring, Mei carried a bag of soil up six flights of stairs to her grandmother's rooftop garden. The elevator had been broken for a month. When she pushed open the metal door, she stopped. A small brown bird sat on the edge of the old water tank, watching her with one bright eye.
Her grandmother, pruning a rose bush, did not look up. 'They came back on Tuesday,' she said. 'The same pair as last year.' Mei crouched beside a cracked pot and found, tucked behind the pipes, a nest built from twine, dry grass, and a strip of blue plastic bag. It looked careless and precise at once.
All afternoon Mei forgot the soil. She watched the bird fly out and return, each trip ending with a small adjustment. By sunset she had filled three pages with times and directions. It was the first time she had paid attention to something that did not ask to be noticed.
Two weeks later, a notice appeared in the lobby. New water tanks would be installed on the roof in June. The old pipes and tangled vines would be removed, and residents had to clear personal items by the end of May. Mei read it three times, then took the stairs two at a time.
Her grandmother was not surprised. 'They have wanted that roof empty for years,' she said, rinsing beans. 'An empty roof is easy to manage. A living one makes work.' Mei understood the manager's side too: the pipes leaked, and repairs cost money. The trouble was that both things were true.
That evening Mei wrote a different kind of list. Not the birds' times, but the building's needs: a dry place for the tanks, a safe walkway, a garden that did not block the drains. If the roof could be useful and alive at once, nobody had to lose. She left the list at the manager's office before school.
The manager read Mei's list twice and asked one question: who would take care of the garden? Mei had not thought that far. She spent the next week knocking on doors, and by Friday eleven neighbours had signed a simple rota. Mr. Okafor on the fourth floor offered to fix the leaky tap. The twins from the second floor wanted to paint the water tank.
In June the tanks arrived, but so did a narrow wooden walkway and a row of deep planters along the parapet. The workers left the vine that sheltered the nest. Mei's grandmother watched from a folding chair, directing traffic with a wooden spoon, and for once nobody told her to sit down.
The birds raised three chicks that summer. Mei stopped counting their flights and started counting visitors instead: neighbours who came up after dinner to water, to talk, to stand quietly at the railing. The roof had not been saved exactly as it was. It had been saved by becoming something more than a roof.
