The bridge over the Kell was narrow enough that two bicycles had to negotiate, and old enough that nobody remembered its first stone. The town council announced it would be replaced in autumn: the arches were cracking, and the school bus had begun to take the long road. Ines, fourteen, heard the news in the bakery and felt, unreasonably, that someone had proposed to replace her grandmother.

Her grandmother did not agree. “Take it down,” she said, stirring her tea. “I crossed that bridge every day for thirty years to work at the mill, and I never once looked at it.” Ines’s grandfather, who had courted her grandmother on that bridge, said nothing at all. He went out with his camera and came back at dusk with forty photographs of the same three arches.

Ines began recording them. Her grandmother remembered the bridge as a route, a wet handrail, a shortcut to wages. Her grandfather remembered a September afternoon and a red scarf. The bus driver remembered the year the railing gave way and the town planted flowers where it had been. The baker remembered the flood, when the bridge was the only dry way to the hospital.

None of the stories matched, and all of them were true. Ines typed them out and pinned the pages to the library wall. People stopped to read and then stayed to argue, correct, add. A woman brought a photograph of her father fishing beneath the arch; a boy drew the bridge as a dinosaur. By the end of the month, the wall held sixty-one versions of one small crossing.

At the council meeting, Ines did not ask them to save the bridge. She read three paragraphs aloud: her grandmother’s wet handrail, her grandfather’s red scarf, the baker’s dry road to the hospital. Then she proposed that the new bridge keep the old stones in its parapet, with a small brass plate for each story that people had brought.

The engineer, who had expected a fight, said the stones could be reused if they were sound. On the last day before demolition, the town walked across together, not in a ceremony, but in an ordinary stream of errands and bicycles. Ines’s grandfather carried his camera and did not use it. “I already have the afternoon,” he said, and they walked back the long way, over the temporary footbridge, talking about something else.
