Every time it rained, a lake appeared outside the school gymnasium. It was not deep, but it was wide, and it smelled faintly of the drains. Students jumped it, slipped in it, and tracked it down the corridor. The caretaker, Mr. Duarte, put out a yellow cone that everyone ignored. Ana, who had joined the science club for the free biscuits, measured the puddle with a ruler and a piece of string. It was eleven metres long and came back after every storm, sometimes before the bell.

She brought the numbers to the club. The asphalt, she explained, shed water like a roof; the drains were old and half blocked by leaves; the ground beneath had nowhere to drink. Her idea was a rain garden: a shallow hollow filled with soil and native plants that would catch the water and let it sink slowly. The club voted to try it. The principal agreed, on one condition: they had to raise the money, do the digging, and keep the entrance safe.

They raised money by washing bicycles and selling seedlings. Mr. Duarte donated three barrels and a wheelbarrow, then stood with his arms crossed while they dug. “Water goes where it wants,” he said. Their first attempt proved him right. They planted the hollow with flowers from a garden centre, and the first heavy rain filled it to the brim. The water sat for four days, the plants turned yellow, and Ben from the football team named it Lake Ana. Someone taped the name to a barrel.

Ana wanted to quit, but the club's rule was to test before giving up. They dug deeper, mixed sand and gravel into the clay, and chose plants that tolerated wet roots. Ben, who had mocked them, came back to help because his boots were the only ones tall enough. It took three weekends. On the last afternoon Mr. Duarte brought lemonade and, without being asked, built a low stone edge around the garden so nobody would step into it by accident.

The next storm arrived on a Tuesday. Ana watched from the library window as water ran off the roof, crossed the asphalt, and disappeared into the garden. By lunchtime the puddle was gone. She measured again: eleven metres had become a damp patch the size of a door. Mr. Duarte checked the drains, said nothing, and later put a small sign beside the garden that read “Please walk around. The ground is drinking.” Ben read it three times and laughed, this time without cruelty.

The club presented their results at the spring fair: rainfall, water levels, plant survival, and the cost of one broken knee compared with one garden. They made no grand claims; they simply showed what had happened in their own yard. Two other schools wrote for the plans, and a council officer photographed the stone edge. Ana kept the taped barrel label in her notebook. Lake Ana had never been a lake, she thought. It had only been a place where nobody had asked the ground what it needed.
