Nell the snail lives under a wet leaf. Her shell has a round opening, just like a door.
She knocks on it twice before bed. "Goodnight, house," she says.
Rain begins, and a beetle taps her shell. "May I come in? My wings are cold."
Nell opens her door wide. The beetle steps inside, and the shell feels warm and small.
In the morning, the beetle leaves a shiny seed by the opening. Nell smiles at the tiny gift.
That night she keeps her door a little open. "Houses can listen," she decides.
