He trots toward it, past tall thistles and a sleepy pond. His small hooves splash in the mud.

At the top of the hill, a gray ewe calls his name. Lamb runs so fast that his ears flap.

Mama licks his muddy nose. "I was listening for you," she says. The rain begins, soft and kind.
