Five ducklings followed Mama Duck to the pond. The smallest one, Pip, liked to stop and look at everything.

He watched a bee and a floating leaf. When he looked up, the others were far ahead.

Mama Duck called them into a line. Pip pushed in the middle, but he wiggled and turned around.

He bumped into his sister, and the whole line wobbled. "Oh dear," said Mama. "We are not ready yet."

Pip tried again. He watched the duck in front and kept his feet still, one behind the other.

The line curved across the pond like a small smile. Pip reached the reeds last, and he was proud.
