The kettle in her grandmother's kitchen had been repaired four times. The handle was wrapped in blue tape, the spout was bent, and the lid no longer sat flush, so steam escaped in a thin whistle audible from the next room. Su Wan had grown up listening for that whistle. Now, in her third year of industrial design, she could not look at the kettle without seeing a list of failures.

Her grandmother had arthritis in both hands. She could lift the kettle only when it was less than half full, and could not turn the stiff tap without both wrists. The family had bought her an electric kettle with a sleek steel body and a touch panel. She had used it twice and put it back in its box, and gone back to the old one on the stove.

For her final project, Su Wan decided to design a kettle for her grandmother. She measured the height of the counter, the width of the sink, the strength of the old woman's grip with a simple squeeze tool. She filled a notebook with drawings of handles, spouts, lids, bases. On the first page she wrote a question she did not yet know how to answer: 'What is elegance for?'

The studio was white walls and north light. On critique day, twelve projects stood on plinths like monuments. Su Wan's kettle was the only object with a visible seam, a wide loop handle and a lid that lifted with a lever rather than a twist. Professor Deng walked past it once, then came back and stood for a long time.

'It looks like a medical device,' he said at last. The room laughed, not unkindly. 'The handle is clumsy. The seam interrupts the form. You have designed for one person and called it design.' Su Wan felt her face heat. She wanted to say one person was enough, that her grandmother's hands were as real as his grid. Instead she wrote down his words, because he was not entirely wrong: the object was not beautiful as the others were.

That night she took the kettle to her grandmother's flat and watched her use it. The old woman filled it at the sink, set it on the stove, and waited for the whistle. Then she did something unplanned: she hooked the handle over the tap to steady herself while turning off the gas. The kettle was not only for pouring. It was also a support, a signal, a reason to stand up.

The final exhibition was held in the white studio, with the public invited. Su Wan's board had changed. There were still drawings, but the first panel was a photograph of her grandmother's hands, and beneath it, in large type: 'What is elegance for?' The kettle stood on a low table, so visitors had to bend to see it.

Professor Deng came with the judges. He picked up the kettle, filled it from a jug, and poured. Then he did what no one had done in three years: he closed his eyes and listened to the whistle. 'It is loud,' he said. 'On purpose,' Su Wan said. 'She cannot see the steam from the stove.' The judges wrote. One asked whether the design could be produced cheaply. Su Wan said that was the next question, and she had brought a cost sheet.

She did not win. The award went to a lamp made of a single folded sheet, and it was genuinely beautiful. But the kettle entered the department's small permanent collection, with a note in the catalogue: 'Designed with one user, for many.' Su Wan called her grandmother from the corridor. 'They put it in a case,' she said. 'Can I still use it?' her grandmother asked. 'Yes,' Su Wan said. 'That was the whole point.'
