In the Zhang household, the phone lay face up beside the salt, always. Zhang Hui was a dispatcher for a repair company: when a pipe burst at midnight or an elevator trapped someone between floors, her phone spoke first. She had trained her family to read its vibrations — two short buzzes meant a job, a long one meant a supervisor. Mianmian, fifteen, had learned to pass the rice before the screen lit.

Dinner was at seven, if the phone allowed. Her father, who worked at a printing plant and came home smelling of ink, had a rule he never enforced: no screens at dinner. He would say it, ask about Mianmian's day, and then the phone would buzz, Zhang Hui would hold up one finger, and the sentence would hang in the air until it went cold.

That autumn Mianmian's choir was to sing at the county theatre. It was not a competition; there was no prize. She had a short solo, eight bars, in the second song. She told her mother three times, each time in a different tone: once casually, once with the printed programme, once by leaving it open on the kitchen table for a week. Zhang Hui put the date in her phone, under a reminder labeled IMPORTANT.

The theatre smelled of dust and new paint. Mianmian stood in the second row in a dark blue dress, and the stage lights blinded her beyond the first five rows. Her father sat in his good jacket, holding the programme too tightly. The seat beside him stayed empty through the first song.

Zhang Hui was in the car park, phone against her ear. A retirement home had lost heating on the coldest night of the year; the dispatcher on duty had gone home sick. Through the open doors she could hear the choir, a swell of voices, then silence, then applause. She could also hear an old woman saying she was fine, really, only her hands were cold. Zhang Hui looked at the doors. She looked at the phone. She stayed where she was.

She entered during the interval. Mianmian saw her from the corridor and did not smile. 'You missed it,' she said. 'It was eight bars.' Zhang Hui began to explain about the heating, the sick colleague, the woman with cold hands. Mianmian listened politely, the way one listens to a weather report, and then said the thing that stayed with her mother for a long time: 'You are always there for everyone. You are just never here.'

The argument lasted four days. It was not loud. It moved from the kitchen to the car to the small hours, and produced a document, because Zhang Hui trusted documents. One page, three rules, signed by all three and stuck to the fridge with a magnet from a hardware fair.

The first rule was a rota: one evening a week, someone else carried the duty phone. The second was a boundary: at dinner the phone lived face down in a bowl by the door, and if it buzzed, her father decided whether the call was truly an emergency. The third was harder: each of them would say, once a week, one thing they had not said for lack of time.

It did not work perfectly. In January the phone rang during dinner and Zhang Hui answered it, and Mianmian left the table, and the bowl stayed empty for a week. But in March, at the spring concert, the solo came again. This time Zhang Hui heard all eight bars. Afterwards, in the corridor, she did not say sorry. She said, 'I heard the third note. The one you held.' Mianmian looked at her for a moment, then took her arm, and they walked out into the cold together.
