The studio at Radio Riverbend was the size of a large cupboard and twice as warm. Kang Rui had been interning for six weeks, and his job at two in the morning was to watch the wires, cut the overnight news, and wake the duty editor if anything happened. Usually nothing happened. He had learned the sound the building made when wind came off the river, and the moment the coffee machine sighed itself to sleep.

At 2:14 a message arrived from a listener: 'The old bridge is cracking. They are turning cars away. Send someone.' No photograph, no name. Kang Rui called the traffic desk and got a recorded voice. He called the fire station; a tired man said they had received three calls about a 'suspicious line' and sent a crew to look. 'Suspicious line' was not a crack. It was also not nothing.

The overnight host leaned into the doorway, headphones around her neck. 'Two minutes to the top of the hour,' she said. 'Do we have a story?' Kang Rui looked at the empty screen, at the clock, at the phone in his hand. Somewhere out in the dark, a crew was walking along a bridge with torches, and a hundred drivers were already choosing another road.

At 2:31, a city news account posted a photograph. It showed a dark line across the deck, captioned: BRIDGE CLOSED AFTER STRUCTURAL CRACK FOUND. Within minutes it had four hundred shares. The overnight host looked at Kang Rui. 'Everyone has it,' she said. 'If we wait, we are the last station with nothing.'

He understood the logic. He also understood that the photograph had no timestamp, no visible landmark, and that a shadow can look like a crack at night. He called the engineer on duty, whose number the duty editor had taped inside a drawer: 'For when the sky falls.' The engineer answered on the ninth ring and said something Kang Rui did not expect. 'There is a crack. It is in the expansion joint. It has been monitored for two years. It is not new, and it is not why we closed the bridge.'

The real reason was a burst water main under the eastern approach, which had softened the soil and made the road unsafe. The engineer sent a photograph of the flooded trench, a traffic cone standing in it, the station's clock reflected in the puddle. Kang Rui wrote four lines, read them to the host, and went on air at 2:47 with the smallest, most careful story of his career.

By morning the other account had deleted its post. No explanation, no apology, just a blank space where the photograph had been. The radio station's phone rang constantly, and most callers wanted to know why the bridge was closed, not who had been first. Mr. Deng came in at seven with two coffees and a face that gave nothing away.

'You were eight minutes slower than the loudest thing in the city,' he said. 'And you were right.' He put a printout on the desk: the engineer's photograph, the station's clock in the puddle, the four lines. 'This is what we have instead of speed. We have a record.' Kang Rui wanted to feel proud. Mostly he felt tired, and hungry, and unexpectedly steady.

That evening he walked to the bridge. The eastern approach was still closed, and a family of four stood at the barrier, reading the notice. The father explained to his daughter what a water main was. Kang Rui listened for a while, then went back to the station to write the follow-up: not about the crack that wasn't, but about the pipe that was, and the men who had worked all night to keep a road from falling into the river.
