The ranking arrived on a Friday, as such things do. Qingshan Vocational School was thirty-first out of thirty-one. The number was printed in a table beside schools with new gyms and parents who hired tutors, and the district asked each principal for a one-page response. Wen Jia, who had been vice-principal for four months, read the table three times and then read the categories.

The categories were not unreasonable. They measured exam pass rates, attendance, and the proportion of graduates who entered higher education. Qingshan scored badly on all three, for reasons that were visible from the school gate: many students worked evenings in their family shops, several cared for younger siblings, and a third had arrived two years behind in mathematics.

At the staff meeting, someone suggested Saturday classes. Someone else suggested removing the workshop hours that made students late for morning registration. Wen Jia wrote both ideas on the board and looked at them for a while. "These are honest answers to the ranking," she said. "I am not sure they are answers to the students."

They tried the easy things first, because the easy things were also the ones the district could see. Registration was moved to the workshop floor, so students who arrived with paint on their hands were counted as present. Saturday sessions were offered, then quietly cancelled when eleven students out of ninety came. Attendance rose by four per cent. Nothing else did.

In October, a student named Hao brought Wen Jia a wooden chair. It was the third one he had made, and it was better than the second. He explained, with the patience of someone who had explained this to many adults, that he could not describe why the joint held, only that he had tested it until it did. His exam score in mathematics was twenty-nine. His chair did not wobble.

Wen Jia began to keep a second table, in a notebook rather than a spreadsheet. In it she wrote things the district did not ask for: the first time a student repaired a machine without being told, the week a quiet girl began answering the phone at the front office, the chair that did not wobble. It was not a ranking. It was evidence of a different kind, and she was not yet sure it counted.

The district asked for one page. Wen Jia wrote one page of numbers, then attached a second page, which she knew might be ignored. On it she described three graduates: one who ran the repair counter of a hardware shop, one who had passed a licensing exam on the second attempt, one who had returned to teach the youngest workshop group. None of them appeared in the ranking.

The response was not celebrated. Qingshan remained near the bottom the following year, and the district did not add a new category. But a member of the review panel visited in spring and spent two hours in the workshop, asking Hao about joints. Before leaving, she asked Wen Jia how the school measured itself. Wen Jia opened the notebook.

"We do not have one number," she said. "We have a page of them, and most are sentences." The panel member wrote that down. Whether it changed anything, Wen Jia could not say. But that evening, the staff meeting began with the chair instead of the table, and the teachers talked for an hour about what a good repair looked like. Measured that way, the school had moved.
