The Compass went to press on Thursdays, which meant Wednesday nights were a controlled panic of layouts, corrections, and someone running to the printer with a USB stick. Nadia, in her second year as editor, had learned to distrust any story that arrived too clean. The newsroom was two rooms above the gym, and the heating worked only when the building was empty.
Felix's piece on the winter fundraiser arrived clean. It said the concert had raised four thousand for the new gym, quoted the principal praising the community, and ended with a line about generosity. Felix had written it in forty minutes and was proud of the ending. The numbers, however, did not add up: ticket sales, donations, and expenses left a gap of nearly a thousand.
Nadia checked the spreadsheet twice. Then she called the treasurer, who said the gap was “a timing issue,” and the principal's office, which said the story was “broadly accurate.” Neither answer was the same as an answer. She put the phone down and looked at the ceiling, which had a stain shaped like a question mark.
The principal asked to see the draft. She was polite, and tired, and explained that the gym equipment had already been ordered; that a negative story would discourage next year's donors; that the missing money was, in fact, an invoice that had not yet cleared. She used the word “context” three times and the word “responsible” once, and Nadia noticed the order.
“Then let me write that,” Nadia said. “With the invoice number.” The principal looked at her for a moment. “The invoice is not public yet.” Felix, sitting beside Nadia, said nothing, which was its own kind of pressure.
That night Nadia rewrote the story three times. In one version the gap disappeared; in another it became a scandal; in the third it was what it was—an unexplained difference, a delayed invoice, and a school that had announced a total before the accounting was finished. The third version was the least exciting and the hardest to defend. She read it aloud to her empty room, and the third version sounded duller than the first two.
They published the third version, with a box explaining what was known, what was not, and when the paper would update it. The principal was unhappy but did not intervene. A donor called the school; the treasurer produced the invoice; the total was corrected the following week.
Some readers said the paper had been unfair. Others said it had not gone far enough. Nadia learned that a story which refuses to become a scandal satisfies almost no one, and that this is not the same as being wrong. A boy in the corridor asked her whether the school was in trouble, and she said only that the paper had asked a question.
At the next editorial meeting, she proposed a standing rule: every number in the paper would have a source, and every source would have a date. Felix groaned. Then he opened his notebook and wrote it down. The Compass went to press again on Thursday, and the panic, as always, was on time. It was not a triumph. It was a habit, and habits were harder to keep.
