The Meridian had been closed for eleven years, and the town had grown used to walking past it the way you walk past a sleeping dog. Dario was seventeen and had never been inside until the youth committee was given a key, a torch and an hour. The foyer still smelled of butter and dust. In the auditorium the seats had been stripped, but the projection booth remained: two heavy machines, a splicer, a wall of film cans labelled in a hand that tilted left. His grandmother had been an usher here in 1961. He found her name in a rota taped inside a cupboard door.

He photographed everything and sent the pictures to the committee chat, expecting enthusiasm. What came back was a spreadsheet. The building needed a new roof, asbestos removal, and a heating system that had been condemned twice. Demolition would cost less than repair, and the site could hold a clinic with fourteen parking spaces. Dario read the numbers twice and understood that he had brought photographs to an argument about arithmetic. He put his phone in his pocket and went back to look at the rota, at his grandmother's name in blue ink, and at the space beside it where the tape had dried and curled away.

The public meeting was held in the school hall, which was too small, and the nurse who spoke first was clearly nervous. She had practised, though. She explained that the nearest clinic was a forty-minute bus ride for people without cars; that the town's average age had risen by nine years since the Meridian closed; that parking was not vanity but the difference between keeping an appointment and missing one. She had brought a chart of the eleven most difficult journeys her patients made each week. It was, Dario thought, the most persuasive thing anyone said all evening.

The heritage group replied with a petition and a slideshow of the 1938 opening night. Both were lovely and neither answered the nurse. Dario's grandmother had come, in a coat she had pressed for the occasion, and when someone in the audience called the building “just an old cinema” she said, quite loudly, “It was never just anything.” Afterwards she apologised to Dario for saying it. He told her not to, but he noticed that nobody had written down what she said, and that the minutes recorded only the vote on the roof.

Dario spent the next three weeks doing something nobody had asked him to do: he measured the building. The auditorium, he discovered, was wide enough to hold four consulting rooms along one wall if the seats were removed rather than restored. The foyer could take a reception desk. The projection booth, being small and awkwardly placed, could remain exactly as it was, a museum of two machines and a wall of film cans, visible through glass. He drew it badly, by hand, and brought it to the committee with the nurse's chart and his grandmother's photograph side by side.

The council did not adopt his plan. It adopted a version of it, after a surveyor confirmed what Dario had measured with a borrowed tape, and after the heritage group agreed to raise money for the roof in exchange for the booth being kept. The clinic opened the following spring, in a building that still said MERIDIAN over the door in letters nobody had bothered to repaint. Dario's grandmother went for a blood test in July and signed the visitors' book, and then, because she could not help herself, she showed the receptionist where the ticket desk used to be.
