The 400-metre freestyle final was set for six in the evening, when the light through the high windows turned the water the colour of old glass. Jun had swum against Theo Marchetti four times and lost three. Theo was taller, calmer, and known in the regional circuit for a finish that arrived from nowhere. Jun's plan was simple: stay close for three hundred metres, then empty himself.
The starter called them to the blocks. Jun heard the beep, and then a second sound, thin and wrong, and then the whistle. Theo had moved. It was a false start, clear on the replay: his left foot left the block before the signal. The officials conferred for ninety seconds. Theo stood with his towel over his shoulders, staring at the scoreboard. Then his name disappeared from lane four.
Jun swam alone for most of the race, the strangest thing that can happen to a swimmer. He won by six seconds, and the applause was polite, and when the medal was placed around his neck he could feel the crowd looking past him at the empty lane. On the podium he smiled because that was what the photographs required. In the changing room he sat with the medal in his hand and did not put it on again.
Coach Duarte found him twenty minutes later and said the correct things: a win is a win, the rule is the rule, Theo had made a mistake and Jun had not. Jun nodded. Then the coach said something less correct and more honest: the medal would look better in a year than it did that night. Jun asked if Theo was still at the pool. The coach said he was in the warm-down lane, and maybe Jun should leave him alone.
He did not leave him alone. Theo was doing slow lengths with a pull buoy, his face closed. Jun sat on the tiles and said the only true thing he had: he had wanted to beat him properly. Theo stopped at the wall and laughed once, without humour. He had false-started twice that season; his start had become a thing he thought about instead of a thing he did.
They talked until the lights went off over the competition pool, leaving only small lamps above the warm-down lane. Nothing was resolved. Theo would still be disqualified, Jun would still have the gold, and no conversation could rewrite the results sheet. But on the bus home Jun noticed that the medal in his bag was no longer the most interesting thing that had happened that day.
In January Coach Duarte arranged a time trial: Jun, Theo, and two others, on a Sunday morning when the pool was empty and the heating was barely working. There was no crowd, no podium, and no medal. The only spectator was a caretaker with a mop. Jun's hands shook on the blocks in a way they never did at finals, because this time there was nothing to blame and nobody to beat except the race itself.
Theo won by three-tenths of a second. Jun touched the wall, tore off his cap, and felt something arrive that he had not expected: relief, enormous and slightly ridiculous. They hung on the lane rope, breathing hard, and Theo said the turn at two hundred metres was the difference. Jun said the finish was the difference. Both statements were true, which is rarer in sport than people admit.
The gold medal went into a drawer with a note that said, in Jun's handwriting, final, 6:12, lane four empty. He does not display it, and he does not apologise for it either. A medal, he has decided, records what the result was. It says nothing about what the race was worth, and that question belongs to the people who swam it.
