The spreadsheet arrived in Nadia's inbox on a Thursday, forwarded by a friend in the office with the subject line you did not get this from me. It contained every attendance record for the first six weeks of term, eleven hundred rows, and a column nobody had asked for: the percentage of students in each grade marked chronically absent. Ninth grade sat at thirty-one. The year before it had been nineteen.

Nadia built a chart that night. She was good at this, and she knew it; a good chart made an argument before anyone had to speak. The line dropped in September and stayed down. She wrote a headline, then another, sharper one: Why Are a Third of Our Freshmen Missing School? She drafted an editorial about apathy, about phones, about students who had stopped believing that showing up mattered.

The adviser, Ms. Ortega, read the draft and asked a question that Nadia found irritating: what changed in September? Nadia said the school year changed. Ms. Ortega circled the word apathy and said, gently, that the word described a feeling, and a spreadsheet could not measure a feeling. She suggested three interviews before publication. Nadia agreed, mostly to prove her wrong.

The first interview was with Abdul, a freshman who had missed nine days. He was not apathetic; he was exhausted. His family had moved in August, and the district had redrawn the bus route, so his trip now involved two buses and a forty-minute walk. He left home at six twenty and reached the school gate at eight forty, which was ten minutes after the bell. Nine absences, he said, were really nine late arrivals counted as absences.

The second interview was with the attendance officer, who confirmed it without hesitating. Late arrivals were logged as absences after thirty minutes; the rule had existed for years but had never mattered much, because the buses had always been reliable. The numbers were accurate. The sentence Nadia had built on top of them was not. She sat in the corridor afterwards and read her own headline three times.

The third interview was with her own memory. In September she had written a post for the paper's account: freshmen need to take school seriously. It had forty likes. She had not checked a single bus schedule. The data had not lied to her; she had asked it a lazy question and accepted the first answer, which is what a chart does when you stop looking.

The story ran on Friday under a new headline: The Route That Made Them Late. It included the chart, the rule, and Abdul's two buses. Nadia also published a correction of her September post, which felt worse than the original error, because it was public and small and permanent. Ms. Ortega told her that a correction was not a confession but a service. Nadia wrote that down and did not entirely believe it for a month.

The district restored a direct bus in November. Chronic absence in ninth grade fell to twenty-two per cent, still too high, but no longer a scandal with a simple villain. The paper's next issue analysed the remaining gap and found three more causes: a broken heating system, a scheduling clash, and a group of students who worked night shifts. None of them fit in a headline.

Nadia kept the original spreadsheet in a folder called first questions. She had learned something that no statistics class had taught her: a number is not an answer. It is a question wearing the costume of an answer, and the costume is convincing until you leave the room and take the bus.
