The kiosks arrived on a Tuesday, standing where the bread baskets used to be. Ren had saved for them for months. On the first morning the queue outside Morgen fell from nine minutes to three, and the rush, which had always felt like an emergency, became something closer to weather: predictable, manageable, passing. He watched the numbers on his phone and felt the relief of a problem solved.

By the second week he noticed Mr. Alvarsson. The old man had come every morning for eleven years, always at ten past eight, always the same order: one dark roll, a slice of cheese, and a small coffee with milk. Now he stood before the screen with his card raised, pressing it against the glass as if it were a door. His speech, since the stroke, arrived in fragments. The screen gave him thirty seconds to choose.

Bea, the new trainee, stepped around the counter and touched his elbow. She did not raise her voice; she simply named things, one at a time, until his hand found the right button. The queue behind him shifted and someone sighed. Ren watched his three-minute average tremble, then recover. He told himself the kiosks had freed his staff. It would be a while before he understood what they had freed them from.

The logs were merciless and precise. Ren could see every order, every pause, every abandoned basket. He noticed a gap one morning and then another: Mr. Alvarsson had not come on Thursday, or Friday, or the six days after. When he finally returned, he ordered the wrong thing twice and paid for both, and his hands shook so badly that Bea had to carry the tray to his table.

Ren sat with him on his break. The old man said the machine was faster than him, and that being slow in public had begun to feel like an apology he could not make. He had stayed home because home did not require him to be quick. He said this without self-pity, which made it worse. Bea, clearing the next table, pretended not to hear.

That evening Ren read his dashboard again. Sales were up eleven per cent; waste was down; the average wait was two minutes forty. Every number was an improvement, and every number described a transaction rather than a morning. Efficiency, he realised, had not given his staff more time. It had given them less reason to spend time, and the two were not the same.

In October they built a small counter at the side of the shop, facing the window. It had no screen and no queue system, only a bell and a chair. Bea worked there from eight to ten, which were the busiest hours, which meant it made no financial sense at all. Ren called it the long counter, because that was what it required: length, patience, a few extra seconds per person.

The kiosks stayed. Most customers preferred them, and Ren did not blame them. But Mr. Alvarsson came back to his old hour, and Bea learned his order without being told, and the two of them developed a ritual that took four minutes and produced no measurable data except a coffee, a roll, and a conversation about the weather that was not really about the weather.

Ren still checks his dashboard every morning; he is not a sentimental man. But he has added one line to the sheet taped inside the till: efficiency buys time, and warmth decides what the time is for. The long counter loses money most weeks. It is the only part of the shop he would refuse to automate.
