An emperor loved fine clothes more than anything else. Every hour he changed his coat, his shoes, or his crown, and he cared little about the people in his city.
One day two strangers arrived. They said they could weave a wonderful cloth that was invisible to foolish people and to anyone unfit for their job.
The emperor was worried that he might not see the cloth. He sent his oldest minister to visit the strangers. The minister saw only empty looms, but he praised the beautiful colours because he was afraid to tell the truth.
Soon the emperor visited the workshop himself. He saw nothing, yet he too pretended to admire the cloth. The strangers measured him, cut the air with scissors, and said that his new clothes were ready.
At the great parade, everyone praised the emperor as he walked through the streets. Then a child said, “But he is wearing nothing at all!” One by one, the people began to repeat the child’s words.
